AN INTERVIEW WITH TODD TJERSLAND
Q: Why did you make FACES OF GORE 2?
Todd Tjersland: I'd just licensed Part 1 to Bad Boy Movie in Germany and they came to me and said, 'Can you make us a sequel?' I agreed, got 50% of the licensing fee upfront, and put the sequel together quickly but with an eye on improving certain aspects...
Q: Like Dr. van Gore's performance?
Todd: There was no way to "improve" that performance, LOL. The only thing I could do was try to get him to be more entertaining... He kept slipping in and out of different accents, and overacting in ways I've never seen before or since. It was hilarious! ;D Anyway, I thought it was an improvement over his blandness in Part 1.
I always knew I was going to turn FOG into a series, so in December of 1998, I shot all the wrap-around footage of Dr. van Gore in the cemetery. I had the scripts already prepared for the sequels, you see! I can be very forward-thinking, sometimes...
Q: What about the bonus section, "War"--it was really extreme!
Todd: In Part 1, we'd had a "bonus section" besides the standard accidents, suicides and murders; we'd basicaly put a preview of my film, THE NECRO FILES, in as free advretising under the guise of comparing "Hollywood special effects" to "real gore." I took a lot of crap from people over that, but the only critic I ever listen to is my gut!
In Part 2 and the sequels, we decided to keep the "bonus section" but to make it something new and "fun" each time. In Part 2, it was a montage of war footage and military executions, a lot of it African. In Part 3, it was a live third world abortion--we added baby crying noises and milkshake blender sound effects. But my favorite "bonus" section was in the best of, which was titled "Homeboy Brain Surgery"--that has to be seen to be believed!
Q: That brings up an interesting point. You added a lot of sound effects to FOG and it upset some people, hearing exaggerrated blood-dripping and, in some cases, even a laugh track!
Todd: F*** 'em if they can't take a joke! It was partly for fun as the FOGs are parodies of other mondo movies, but also because a lot of the original audio was unusable. Either poorly recorded or people jabbering in foreign languages I couldn't be bothered to translate and subtitle.
I made an executive decision to strip out every last bit of original audio and rebuild the audio from scratch. So now we get clean, crisp sound: blood-dripping, bones cracking, crowd noises, machinery, cars, etc. And I stand by the laugh track. It's social commentary.
Q: Social commentary, how?
Todd: What, you want me to do all your thinking for you? You figure it out, tell me, and then I'll let you know if you guessed correctly. ;D
Q: Nevermind. What was your experience making FOG 2 on such short notice?
Todd: Excellent! It was the best time I've ever had making a movie. It was pre-sold, so it was already paid for before I ever lifted a finger! Plus, there was no cast or crew to worry about; I'd already shot van Gore's segments so it was just me and the editor. FOG2 was a completely worry-free project that allowed me to get even more creative.
Q: Which film in the series do you like the best?
Todd: Part 2; no doubt about it! Maybe because it was so hassle-free and already in profit before I'd invested anything into it, but also, I thought it was more entertaining. I've often been quoted as saying the series went better as it went along--I'm not disputing that!--but FOG2 holds a special place in my heart because it was so liberating to do. It proved sequels don't have to suck.
Q: Didn't it suffer a similar fate with the German censor as Part 1?
Todd: That's true, yes. Unlike Part 1, it never got an uncut German release. Bad Boy was forced to it out in a butchered version, stripped of the "Murder" section. It's a damn shame the fans never got to see it uncut in all its glory. I had Part 3 and the Best Of all ready to put into production, too, but the censorship issue killed any further attempts to license more sequels.
Q: But you produced the sequels anyway?
Todd: Yeah, I'm crazy like that! ;D
