Cool, I haven`t heard of that one. I probably would vote for Silent Hill 2 as the best horror game there is!!!! Best plot, best scares, even if Resident evil also gives me the creeps every time I play it.

Silent Hill started off scary as hell with those zombie kids, but then I just got bored, confused and frustrated by my lack of progress and the nonsensical plot. So I quit and never played any of the sequels. I had the same problem with the movie, but rather than point fingers at any of the cast or crew who all did a fine job, I think the fault lies with trying to make sense out of the Japanese source material. It's impossible, LOL. Despite that, Silent Hill was, without a doubt, the finest video game adaptation so far. It really looked and felt like the game. The director did a great job of capturing the essence of Silent Hill onscreen. In terms of playability, storyline and scares, the series that I prefer is Resident Evil, in particular 2, 3, 4 and Code Veronica. What I truly hate about RE are the puzzles. I just want to kill zombies, not play 7th Guest. ;D The other thing I don't like (but find more forgivable) are the inclusion of stupid Lovecraftian mutants. Again, I just want to fight zombies, not weirdo monsters... The first RE movie was horrible; its only redeeming feature was the laser trap corridor, but that belonged in a different movie (like Cube) and they killed the only good actor (the black guy) off in the first twenty minutes! And hardly any zombie action! WTF? RE2: Apocalypse was a lot better (meaning it was marginally entertaining vs. RE1 being unwatchably bad) but still no great achievement. At least it had more zombies in it, LOL. Outside the horror genre, I was really into God of War for awhile, but the problem was, about halfway in, it became God of Traps: Instant death traps! And only rarely could you save anywhere near the trap. Look, I'm no good at that kind of quick reflexes stuff! I signed up to kill Greek mythological monsters and solve my problems with violence, not walk the hire wire act over a pit of flaming lava while giant saw blades spin around my head... The game was bloody as hell but you could also do it with two hot chicks at the same time to replenish your life force! I've never seen that in any other game! ;D

One other mature horror game I loved was Darkwatch for the PS2. You play an outlaw vampire cowboy in the wild west fighting demons, zombies, skeletons and other vampires. It sounds silly, but it's actually well done! You can choose to be evil or good by your actions throughout the game. There's lots of gore and even a hot vampire sex scene. It took me a little while to get used to the controls... There were plenty of times I wanted to smash the controller in frustration, but at least the problems were combat-oriented, rather than traps and puzzles. I can eventually solve any combat situation, but traps and puzzles are not my strong suit! I guess I'm better at old skool Atari games like Space Invaders and Missile Command, LOL!

The other thing that made Resident Evil 4 such a vast improvement over the others was the new combat targeting system. The rural Spain location was fantastic and so was the island fortress. It was nice to get out of Racoon City and super-secret labs for a change.

You are right about the monsters in Resident evil...but only the big ones, like the giant snake, were really unnessecary. I like the little green guys, because they are fast and add to the fear factor I disagree concerning the little riddles. I love them. But that is because I´m not really that of an action freak(I don`t like ego shooters for example) and I think the puzzles etc. work well to create atmosphere. But Todd you should definitely give Silent Hill 2 a try. The story is absolutely GREAT. It`s like you are playing a David Lynch movie...you got to love that. By the way: Resident evil 1 was crap, but I hated the second one even more (not an action freak...remember ) But at least it was better than anything Uwe "please stop making movies" Boll ever touched.

I guess I wouldn't mind the RE puzzles if they didn't require me to cheat to get past them. I either look up the answers online, or quit playing forever. The puzzles are too hard...
I prefer RPGs like Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, but I do like action games and first-person shooters (my favorite was Kingpin).

There is one riddle in the hard version of Silent Hill 3 about some Shakespeare books, which is (I´m pretty sure) unsolvable! I played with a friend Kingpin back when it came out, but I watched and he played . I just need to jump from one platform to another to be happy

Kingpin was awesome... The first and best time I ever had playing an FPS online. I had my own clan and we kicked ass, LOL. When Heat.net went to a pay model, or belly-up, or whatever the hell happened (both?), then that was that. I didn't like Gamespy very much.

I enjoyed RE:2 for what it was. Yeah, the puzzles were maddening, but the zombie killin' made up for it, in my opinion.
I wish they'd release RE:4 for the PC.
I played the FEAR demo a while back and I have never been more terrified of a little girl in my life. Warning - TAKE HEART MEDICATION BEFORE PLAYING!
My favorite zombie game, by far, however, is They Hunger, a mod for the original Half-Life game. (They're working on a new They Hunger for the HL2 engine.)
Actually, Half Life 1 is an excellent horror/SF game. The crab-head zombies are nicely creepy, plenty of darkened corridors with jump in your seat situations, and the barnacles are just screaming for a movie sequence. Todd - ever think of making Half Life, the movie? Grow a goatee and you can be Gordon!

Dah! I also forgot Blood. Zombies. Evil cultists. Spiders the size of housecats.
And enough horror movie homages (the Camp Crystal lake level especially) to make it a true joy.

I forgot Blood, too, but I was horribly addicted to it back in the day (1997?). Evil chanting cultists with machine guns, zombies, ghosts and demons, oh my! It was HP Lovecraft meets The Evil Dead for action fans!
PS: Skaramine, I accidentally hit "modify post" and posted my reply in yours--I caught it and reposted it properly. Still not used to having these crazy godlike admin powers... Gives me slightly a different interface so I have to be careful what I click, lol. Nice to see you here, BTW.

Glad to be here. Sorry it took me so long to join in.
Oh... I keep forgetting my favorite level - the Shining level. Complete with frozen Jack Nicholson that you could blow to Nicholsicles with a shotgun blast, and the ball room of zombies.

The bad guy hero in Darkwatch reminds me of the evil hero in Blood... They should really remake Blood with tight new graphics and new levels. I'd buy it! I tried playing Blood again recently and was really taken aback by how sh*tty the graphics are by today's standards. It made the game--once one of my favorites--unplayable. Amazing how far we've come since 1997.
