Watched the history of pizza and caught some Zzz's instead of pulling the all-nighter I had planned, but on the bright side, I have been up since 4am and the book's now up to 105,000 words, which is roughly where I'd hoped to have it. I'm taking tonight off to game Star Wars Miniatures with my best buddy and his 8 year old son, so we'll see how much further the novel can get as the morning progresses... The afternoon's gonna be shot with a nap and constructing a 3D Death Star out of my Dwarven Forge Sci-Fi Master Maze kits...

Ah, my noon cut-off date has arrived and I sit at 107,308 words, and a crucial moment for our would-be survivors is unfolding... Time for a nap. I doubt I'll get any more written today, what with nap time and a night of adventure gaming. I hope to get more done over the weekend. The end of the book is so close now, I can taste it!

Okay, I stayed up all night and am almost done with Deathbreed; the current word count is a whopping 120,000 words and there's just a little ways left to go... 5-10,000 words or so with an epilogue. Then begins the merry game of going in and editing the damn thing... the infamous Second Draft! Fudge it. I'm not even gonna think about that right now. I got a reason to celebrate!

Rock on! I just finished the first draft of DEATHBREED: A Zombie Novel tonight at 8 o' clock PST. Clocking in at 124,694 words (510 pages), just under the 125,000 max I was shooting for! YAY!!! I did it! ;D

Now begins the long and painful editing process... The dreaded Second Draft! The good news is, going back and rereading the early chapters was not the nail-biting "is it any good?" experience I was worried about. There's definitely a novel here, and a damn good one, IMO. Not that it doesn't need polishing... A little trim here, a little added there, but overall, it is kicking ass. I love it and believe in it, and that's what's most important. Hopefully, my fans and the public will embrace it as well--though the book is so delightfully, unrelentingly vicious I don't expect much mainstream appeal. Which is fine. I create my art first and foremost for myself; if others dig it, even better. If not, well--screw 'em. You can't please everyone!

I'm 22,000 words into the Second Draft--that covers the first five chapters and the first two days worth of events. Mostly adding little details here and there that I missed on the First Draft; not a lot of cutting going on. The word count is increasing rather than shrinking, but I don't know if that will continue as I move forward. I'm also fiddling around with new ideas for the ending... Ah, a lovely Third Draft beckons, methinks! ARGH!

Still kicking ass on the Second Draft... I've reworked the ending a bit while essentially keeping it intact. But it's much more powerful now and manages to wrap up a few loose ends. Maybe I'll offer multiple endings online or something. Spent some time laying it out--just to see what it would look like in a possible final, published form. 316 pages (125,188 words at the moment); that's as a 9x6 Perfect Bound Softcover, in 11 pt. Garamond type (and growing, as the Second Draft continues). I expect the Second Draft to be finalized over the weekend...

Went to a photoshoot for the DEATHBREED cover/promotional art tonight. Did the zombie make-up myself and played a zombie (see my new avatar at left) along with Isaac, the graphic artist (aka the zombie from The Necro Files) and Necro Files 2 director Ron Carlo's wife, Candy... Isaac will then pimp the pix out in Photoshop. Should be frickin' sweet!!!

Thanks! It's amazing what a little (okay, a LOT) of fake blood can do. I used three different kinds of make-up (detail lost in the avatar pic but readily apparent in the original photos). I started with a jar of "Fresh Scab" as a base for the wounds and blood smears, then added Cinema Secrets' "Stage Blood" (congealed) for the majority of the blood, and "Mouth Blood" ("zesty mint flavor") for the gory spittle. The photos are hideous enough on their own, but once they get spruced up in Photoshop--BAM! Super-scary! PS: This damn admin interface lets me modify other people's posts (a good thing in some cases), but I keep hitting "modify" when I mean to hit "add reply" when it comes to your posts, Skaramine. This is the second time I've done this... Haha! People will think you're a fake name of mine or something.

Sometimes I wish I were just a figment of someone's imagination, Todd.
The curse of creativity for some people sometimes results in an abrasiveness and a level of anarchistic self-hatred which can make being torn apart by a zombie horde feel like a sweet release instead of a slow, agonizing death.

I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes I wish I hadn't been cursed with being the way I am so I could "fit in" better--but that ain't never gonna happen and I wouldn't be happy even if it did... I'd simply wish I were more creative, and the whole vicious circle would complete itself, LOL. On the bright side, I just had a genius idea for the sequel to my novel that has me so damn excited I can't wait to get the final draft done so I can start on the new book...
