Ok, I got back home on Monday from 3 days of Mayhem at the Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium. I've never been to any music festivals, metal or otherwise. The last live bands I went to see were A Flock of Seagulls and Missing Persons at the Ballard Firehouse in 1996, lol. I got so drunk I passed out and the Seagulls guitarist came by and asked what the hell was the matter with me, lol. I just don't like live music much, in person or recorded, except when I'm getting drunk in jazz clubs... The only bands that have almost tempted me to go see them since were Pat Benatar and Blue Oyster Cult at the Indian casino... But they come every year, so I keep putting it off.

I've been to Graspop Metal Meeting once to see Cannibal Corpse. I liked the gig, but I don't like those big festivals. Too crowdy. To expensive. Besides that: I like metal. I grew up with Anthrax, Slayer and Metallica, but then I discovered the mighty Agathocles en Napalm Death...

Some guy tried to charge me $8 for a bottle of water at Ozzfest!!! WTF? Not cool. I should have brought a coupon... one made out of solid wood like this:

Yeah, I don`t like the big crowds neither, but I´m prepared to overlook that for some goode music. I saw Cannbal Corpse in Pratteln (Switzerland) at the no mercy festival along with Kataklysm. Corpsegrinder is the fastest headbanger on the planet

I don't know the individual members of Cannibal Corpse, but let's say I like the "general sound". ;-)

I am way older than the typical metal music fan but I've always been different - why change now?....I grew up on "hard rock" ie: Sabbath, Zeppelin, etc...saw every show I could afford - and snuck in to the one's I couldn't...today, I love the current crop of extreme metalists - especially the Swedish/Norwegian bands like "In Flames", "Dimmu Borgir", "Soilwork", and the Italy/France legends like "Lacuna Coil" and "Gojira"... on and on...I've met I.F. 3 times! They are my favorite...I am insanely envious of the huge metal festivals so common in Europe each summer but practically extinct in the USA...I don't understand why there is such a difference in the two cultures but there is...Extreme metal bands play in large venues in Europe but play clubs in the US (with a few exceptions and those are US-based bands like "Slipknot" (whom I do not like)...
And yes, I agree: We've got to get Todd to a good show! He's way too young to hang up his rock and roll shoes just yet. (I never will) But, I guess when you were literally raised on music (it was always on in the house when I was growing up) it's hard to imagine life without it being omnipresent...still, I can't help but think if we took Todd to a show - even a classic like AC/DC or RUSH, he'd get hooked..."Todd...will you be my guest sometime?".....it's funny-I would have pegged Todd as a metal fan too, but I'm stereotyping...even Howard Stern avoids concerts (and crowds too for that matter)...he has interviewed every major band in the world and has them begging for his presence but never goes to a show (despite the VIP treatment he would be afforded) and rarely even listens to music! Go figure...
