Have you tried the all-natural, all delicious microbrewed gourmet sodas from Reed's? If I was stocking up for the zombie apocalypse, I'd want a truckload of this stuff to see me through! www.reedsgingerbrew.com/My faves are Reed's Extra Ginger Brew (26 grams of fresh ginger per bottle!), Reed's Spiced Apple Brew, Virgil's Real Cola and Virgil's Root Beer. They are truly beyond compare!!! You can find them at most Fred Meyer, Thriftway and Trader Joe's.

I don't think I've ever drank "rootbeer". Don't know what it is. Normal beer is just fine for me, thank you ;-)

Out here we have a Frys Electronics that carrys Cocacola from Mexico. Why is this special? Well Mexican Coke, (Unlike the Coke from Peru), is still made with cane sugar. Back in the eighties when they did that new coke, classic coke crap, they switched the formula from Cane Sugar to High Fructose corn syrup. Hell, we were happy to get Classic coke back and didn't really notice how the flavor had changed. If you are old enough and didn't have restrictive parents, you just might remeber what Coke used to tast like. My first glass was like a flood of memories. It was Star Wars, Kiss Alive II and Mork and Mindy, in 12 fluid ounces. I totally remembered the flavor. Mindy was hot. Greg Author Rise and Walk

You can still buy sodas made with real sugar cane (I won't touch anything with high fructose corn syrup in it anymore). Unfortnately, they can be hard to find; check your grocer's organic/natural foods section. That's where Reed's and other natural sodas usually are. I just tried Zevia brand (www.zevia.com) organic sodas. They are made with stevia (a leaf from the rain forest) that is a natural sweetener. They tasted like regular diet soda but without that evil sucralose fake sugar crap. Unfortunately, they were also twice as expensive. I paid $6.99 for a six-pack. Ouch!

I'll have to try those...there is a "rare" soda dealer here in Minneapolis and he has many all cane-sugar sodas (or "pop" as it is called here in the Midwest)...My favorite Ginger Ale is "Vernors", although that is not particularly rare (it is hard to find here, however)...I drink that stuff exclusively...my soda dealer sells almost exclusively in bottles...the only way to drink soda. Sadly, one has to go through a specialty shop to get bottles anymore...I had a Dr. Pepper bottle with cane sugar recently...amazing! and yes, you CAN tell the difference! (as night is to day)...

OK, help me out here....I've had ginger ale many times as a kid, always reminded me of 7-up. The other day I bought some Goya ginger beer and it just about killed me! It tasted like someone mixed Sprite with capsicum. Is there a difference between ginger ale & ginger beer, was the stuff I've had before especially weak, or did someone accidentally spill some habeneros into the batch at Goya?

Hi Prof, Yes, there is a difference between the Ginger Ales most of us grew up with and the new, micro-brewed Ginger Beers... It came as quite a shock to me when I first found out! Never tried Goya (not available in my area) so can't comment on it but my favorite, Reed's Extra Ginger Beer, has major bite and burns so good all the way down. You have to really love ginger to dig it though because it packs 26g of fresh ginger per bottle! It tastes nothing like the weak, watered-down ginger ale produced by companies like Vernor's, Schweppes or Canada Dry. All the Reed's Ginger Beer and Spiced Apple Cider varieties have some degree of bite and heat which may be an acquired taste for some but I loved 'em at first sip. You can find Reed's Ginger Beer/Apple Brew (and their other brand, Virgil's Root Beer/Real Cola/Cream Soda) at Trader Joe's and an increasing number of supermarkets around the country such as Safeway. Sorry to sound like a corporate shill, LOL, but I really do love their products!
