You could also just download Openoffice 2.0.
Totally free, and it has the option to convert any document into a PDF. I even managed to recover a friend's script which only existed in a scanned photocopy format, convert it to a PDF and then convert the PDF to simple text.
Openoffice is also just a simple and sublime word processor.

I also hear www.pdf995.com is good, but it is nagware (always asking for $9.95 to buy a license key).

That is why Openoffice 2.0 is so good. Not a single smidge of nagware in it.
And it was good enough that I paypalled them some bucks anyhow.

I'm a Linux-user, so I have OpenOffice as well. PDF-conversion is a great tool. Good compression, easy to use... really worth checking out.
